DSC AGM and Election, Saturday, October 23, 2010
Submitted by Ernie Lam
The Annual General Meeting of the Downtown Swim Club has been set for Saturday, October 23, 2010. Once again this year, Tony and Phillip have graciously offered their home for the evening, beginning at 7:30 pm after practice (26 Boulton Avenue, near Queen East and Broadview). And like last year, the meeting will be a potluck dinner. At this time, the Executive will briefly review the year that was, and the Treasurer will present his budget for the next year. As well, a new Executive committee for 2010/2011 will be struck.
Many of the Executive will be retiring this year. For myself, I have been part of 4 Executives between 2006 and 2010 during my 5 years with the Club, and it has been a great way for me to meet new people, and make new friends. After 4 years though, I think it would be nice to get some new blood into DSC, and in its leadership. That is how the Club gets refreshed, how it grows, and how new ideas are introduced and enacted. Please don’t be shy. Please don’t think you can’t do it. Please don't think you are too busy; we all live busy lives, and we are all busy... And please don’t think you have nothing to contribute. Step up to the plate. I know a lot of you have very unique skillsets, and the Club needs your help if it is to continue to be an active part of the community, and thrive!
- CO-CHAIR (1 vacancy): The co-chair chairs executive and general meetings of the Club, liases with the pools, coaches and ad hoc committees, and provides overall direction to the Club. The co-chair position is a 2 year term. In the first year, the junior co-chair will work with the senior incumbent and learn the ropes of the job. In the second year, the junior co-chair will assume the senior co-chair position, and mentor a new junior co-chair to take over the position when they leave the Executive. I am the outgoing co-chair this year, and Jennifer Di Filippo will become the senior co-chair next season.
- Secretary: Allan Pacheco has served as the Secretary this past year, and has agreed to stay on for another year.
- TREASURER(vacancy): This individual is responsible for managing the financial assets of the club, maintains financial records and reports on the financial status of the Club. As well, this individual liases with the treasurer of the DAC to reconcile financial statements. Felipe Sanchez has been the treasurer this past year.
- MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR (vacancy): This individual tracks attendance at practices, ensures membership forms are completed for returning and new members, collects payment of membership and swim fees, and maintains the current membership roster. Tony Dunn has been the membership coordinator for at least the past 3 years, if not longer.
- Social coordinator: Kevin O’Keefe has served in this position for the last several years, and has agreed to stay on for another year.
- SWIM MEETS PARTICIPATION COORDINATOR (vacancy): This individual encourages and coordinates participation in local and out-of-town swim meets. For the past 2 years, Rick has been the swim meets coordinator.
Two other non-Executive positions will also come open this year:
- WEBMASTER: For the past 3 or 4 years, Daniel has been the webmaster for the DSC. He uploads and downloads images, keeps the information on the website up-to-date, and makes alterations to the swimming schedule as required. We need someone with some computer savvy to take this over, or change it up completely. One suggestion that has been made to me, has been to eliminate the website altogether, and to replace it with a DSCToronto blog. An interesting idea…
- WETSCREAM! EDITOR: For at least the past 4 years, Paulo has been the Wetscream! editor. Each and every week, every member of the DSC receives this electronic newsletter informing them of events that may be of interest to the Club. The Wetscream! connects us all on a regular basis, even if you aren’t at the pool each practice or each week!
If you have an interest in any of these positions, please see me or the incumbent in the position. Nominations can be sent to Allan (apacheco1973@gmail.com) or to me.
-Ernie.

Article:How to Sight Like a Professional Swimmer
Submitted by Don Ainslie
In a SwiMetrics stroke analysis of the world's elite swimmers there were numerous subtle--but very important--differences between the swimming technique of elite and average swimmers in open water. The most significant difference was the relative drop in velocity (i.e., forward speed) during sighting. While SwiMetrics measures a relatively small decrease in velocity during sighting of elite athletes, the decrease in velocity of average swimmers is quite significant.
